What does "service" mean to you?

Tourism is the staple of economic development in Northern Michigan, and with our growing community and new businesses, thousands of jobs are being created right in our own backyard.

Here are just a few of the accolades we have received over the past couple of years:

The recognition we have received provides HUGE opportunity for our local entrepreneurs and service industry employees. So, what exactly defines "service?"
  • Hotels, inns, motels, and resorts
  • Restaurants, wineries, brew pubs, and bars
  • Outdoor tourism- boating, water sports, skiing, and local tours
Do you have any other ideas of service hospitality? Please feel free to share!

Happy Fall in Northern Michigan!

My favorite time of year is finally here- fall! In honor of the season, I've dolled up the site with some decor to get us in the mood for the renowned color tour!

Restaurants, wineries, hotels, and other local businesses alike with begin to see the height of fall tourism in Northern Michigan as the leaves change to a beautiful array of orange, red, and yellow- and our beloved "Fudgies" will soon return for another piece of the cherry pie. It's important for your business to be not only staffed, but prepared for the busy (and not-so busy) days as our weekend travelers arrive throughout the next few weeks.

The color tour brings more opportunity and exposure than a business owner may realize. With the amazing creativity our locals possess and the growing competition in the area, it's important to set yourself apart from the next. What can you do?

  • Have you heard of websites such as Living Social, Signpost, and Groupon? Now is the perfect time to consider setting up special pre-paid deals to bring in clientele on those slower days- not just for the fall, but year-round.  Remember- winter will soon be approaching, and families try and pinch every penny for Christmas presents and holiday fun.
  • Local promotions- such as specials during slow week days, weekend getaway packages that are hard to resist, or special events- consider partnering up with a friend who owns a business of a different nature. Mixing up the crowd is fun, and will leave the guest wanting to come back for more.
  • Utilize social media! Locals as well as visitors love to get the latest on the soup of the day, room rates, weather reports, specials and sales. What can you use? Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Yelp, and many other sites are free, and can get you the exposure you're looking for.
